House of Ruth Maryland’s shelter is a safe place where battered women and their children live as a community dedicated to non-violence. Residents work together to keep space clean and healthy; they are assisted by housekeeping staff. The shelter is drug and alcohol free and battered women who have had substance abuse or mental health problems must be in treatment while living in shelter. Residents, staff and volunteers are equally committed to keeping the shelter location confidential to protect everyone there. School-age children attend school; some others are enrolled in childcare.

During this phase, we work intensively in partnership with each woman to assist her in securing income and housing. Also, we support women in utilizing the shelter’s rich offering of tools and services to work through trauma, begin to plan for self-sufficiency, and expand her capacity to grow through involvement in enrichment and wellness programs. Our services include enriched housing for families and single women, trauma-informed child development, and free counseling to anyone, regardless of gender, who is a survivor of trauma and abuse. For over 40 years, House of Ruth has provided safe and stable housing to women, children and families in the DC area who have experienced houselessness and abuse. House of Ruth Maryland is one of the nation’s leading intimate partner violence centers, helping thousands of battered women and their children find the safety and security that so many of us take for granted.

Dr. Veronica Maz was a Georgetown University professor when she founded House of Ruth. She realized that, while there were shelters for men in D.C., there were no shelters for women at the time. She went on to found not only House of Ruth, but Martha’s Table and SOME (So Others Might Eat).

The Bridges Program extends House of Ruth’s supportive services to families exiting our service-enriched housing programs. House of Ruth provides supportive housing services with appropriate adaptations based on guidance from D.C.’s Department of Health and Human Services in response to COVID-19. Kidspace is physically closed while teachers provide online support and activities to parents and re-opens by July 2020. We deepen our financial and material assistance to program participants, particularly to those who lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic. The childcare center offers invaluable services to women in the shelter community who need time to concentrate on their own process of healing and renewal. The program provides a safe, accessible, educationally rich environment where mothers can comfortably leave their children. It offers the stability, safety and predictability so greatly needed by children who have been exposed to trauma.

Since 1977, we have worked to end the threat of partner abuse by providing a number of housing, counseling, legal, and outreach options.

House of Ruth Maryland was founded in May of 1977 by a coalition of women’s organizations, religious groups, service providers, and elected officials to provide a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and their children. In November of 1977 we opened Baltimore’s first crisis shelter for these victims in a row house on North Calvert Street. The shelter was staffed by one paid staffed person and a voluntary Board of Directors. The shelter has twenty-three bright spacious, private bedrooms with baths and a large dining room and kitchen.

We ask residents for a commitment to stay six months and the maximum stay is two years. Residents must maintain a source of income and pay subsidized rent monthly. Finally, all residents who are experiencing mental health problems or have abused drugs or alcohol must seek and stay in treatment. House of Ruth Maryland’s Chatline is a confidential lifeline to victims in need. The Chatline is an alternative way to seek support for those experiencing IPV who may not have access or the ability to call the 24/7 Crisis Hotline. Through the Chatline, Advocates can help with the same services as the Crisis Hotline, except Rapid Rehousing and Emergency Shelter.
